Strong partnerships are pivotal to the success of UPP’s business model and at the core of our relationships with our university partners. At the University of York, the partnership arrangement with UPP has been further enhanced by the university taking an equity stake in the Special Purpose Company (SPC) established to operate more than 1,000 rooms at Halifax and Wentworth Colleges.
The University of York is keen to develop a balanced student community, which means not only having first year students on campus but retaining second and third years wherever possible. As a result, the university aims constantly to improve and expand its estate to provide affordable, high quality space. Its partnership with UPP, which now covers 1,000 rooms on campus, allows the university to do just that. In 2001, UPP established a partnership with the University of York to develop student rooms at Halifax College and redevelop rooms at Wentworth College. Halifax College, part of the university’s Halifax campus, was completed in October 2001. Onsite facilities include a shop, 24-hour access IT centre, launderette and bar. The Wentworth College scheme included the refurbishment of the Wentworth College building to create a graduate college environment. In 2007 an estate transfer agreement was signed that established a new partnership agreement with UPP, covering 304 additional student rooms on campus.
