During the ten-week summer break, the university rents its student housing to visitors to the historic city. In partnership with UPP, the university offers 1,761 self-catering rooms of such a high standard that it has achieved a 3* quality assurance rating from Visit Britain. Last summer, 28,000 bed nights were sold, bringing in considerable additional revenue for the university.
In 2008 the university also won a Green Tourism Business Scheme Award for adopting environmentally-friendly practices including providing recycling facilities for guests and putting in place effective waste management and energy efficiency strategies.

Students at the University of Plymouth were given the chance to move into one of 329 new rooms at the beginning of the 2008 academic year, courtesy of UPP. The new accommodation is part of a £32 million scheme undertaken with the university, that not only provides first class student housing but includes a range of new academic facilities that really put Plymouth on the map.
UPP's partnership with the University of Plymouth was one of its first student accommodation schemes and was divided into several phases. Phase one was Radnor Hall, consisting of 430 en suite bedrooms in a ten block complex that is just a few minutes walk from the university campus. It is now considered one of the most desirable student residences in the city. Phase two was Pilgrim Hall - where the development and operation of 238 student study bedrooms was completed in September 2000. In 2004, UPP took over a further 762 existing rooms and, in the same year, UPP and the university entered into a development partnership agreement giving UPP responsibility for operating 1,759 rooms.
