UPP’s latest scheme at Carnegie Village, Leeds Metropolitan University, was officially opened in September by the Rt Hon Rosie Winterton MP, Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber. Sean O’Shea, UPP’s Chief Executive was honoured to meet the minister at the opening of the pioneering scheme. The new accommodation, comprising 479 student rooms, was built using UPP’s Eco Residence model.
A groundbreaking design that dramatically reduces the carbon footprint of university student accommodation has been employed by UPP on its new Carnegie Village development at Leeds Metropolitan University. The rooms opened during September 2009 and form part of UPP’s pioneering Eco Residence initiative, aiming to promote sustainable student accommodation and green lifestyles. The university and UPP have used a range of energy-saving tools in the design and build of the new accommodation, including solar panels, digitally controlled lighting and rainwater recycling. They will be operated day-to-day by UPP.
The innovative Eco Residences at Leeds Metropolitan University were selected as the UK 2010 BREEAM Award winner in the Multi-Residential category. The BREEAM Awards recognise buildings which demonstrate sustainable design and utilise innovative solutions to minimise environmental impact. Part of the scheme has also been certified as meeting PassivHaus criteria, marking it out as the UK’s first student accommodation facility to achieve this standard of sustainable design.
As part of the estate transfer of the university’s student accommodation, UPP Asset Management is also responsible for the operation of 1,557 existing rooms in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University. These rooms are spread over three sites: Kirkstall Brewery, Sugarwell Court and Woodhouse Flats – two of which have their own laundry, shops, student bar and fitness centre.
