Green housing for Kent students

September 2008 saw the completion of UPP’s second Eco Residence scheme - at the University of Kent. UPP will manage the accommodation, but students will deal direct with the university over accommodation allocation, room licences and all pastoral matters. The deal, funded by Barclays, transfers construction, operational, asset and demand risk from the university to UPP.

University of Kent

Postgraduate students at the University of Kent moved into sustainable accommodation at the university's new Woolf College in Canterbury in September 2008. The accommodation has been built to UPP's proprietary Eco Residence template and comprises study bedrooms arranged in flats of six to eight rooms, including some enhanced bedrooms, self-contained studios as well as disabled access rooms.

The superstructure was built using highly insulated, air tight timber panels sourced from sustainable, managed forests, producing a significantly better carbon footprint than the norm. The timber frames were manufactured off-site to minimise waste. To help promote sustainability, many energy-saving systems have been installed inside the building.

As well as the residential accommodation, UPP have provided a state-of-the-art 470-seat lecture theatre, which opened early in 2009.
