Recieving the Breem Award at Ceremony

The Eco Residence at Lancaster University received a BREEAM Excellent rating in 2008, and was the first replicable, scalable model of its kind in the HE sector.

In 2010 UPP's innovative Eco Residence at Leeds Metropolitan University won the UK BREEAM Award in the Multi-Residential category. Part of the scheme has now been certified as meeting PassivHaus criteria, marking it out as the UK’s first student accommodation facility to achieve this standard of sustainable design.

A Unique Approach

UPP is the leading provider of campus infrastructure, student accommodation and asset management services to the UK higher education (HE) sector. UPP invests in universities, enabling them to release capital to provide better academic facilities for their students. This investment includes some of the most innovative offerings in the market.

Partnership

The business model of UPP is based on long-term partnerships with universities where both parties benefit throughout the life of the project. As part of its model, UPP accepts the risks associated with the funding, development and operation of university infrastructure, allowing our university partners to release capital for investment in areas of core provision such as teaching and research; to better meet both immediate and long-term financial objectives. Our schemes are financed on a non-recourse basis and, at the end of the concession period, are handed back to the university.

Eco Residences

As part of our commitment to the environment, UPP has developed a pioneering Eco Residence model that is now being used by a number of universities around the country to provide sustainable student accommodation.

UPP has developed Eco Residences in partnership with the following institutions:

The Eco Residence model now sets the standard for sustainable campus infrastructure and demand for this model is likely to increase given that HEFCE has made it clear that future capital funding for universities will be linked to carbon performance. By using off-site manufacturing methods to produce timber-framed buildings from renewable sources, UPP is able to reduce the carbon footprint of each build by 30%. This innovative system, plus a range of energy and water saving technologies, all add up to a BREEAM/eco homes ‘excellent’ rating – and high quality student housing at no cost to the university.
