ANUK Code of Standards for Large Developments
UPP is a founder member of the Committee of Management of the ANUK Code of Standards, aimed to improve standards in the provision of student accommodation. The Code establishes management standards for all residential developments managed and controlled by educational establishments in the UK. This voluntary code specifies appropriate controls to ensure that development delivers for the particular needs of students.

British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM)
UPP is accredited with the British Institute of Facilities Management. Founded in 1993, the Institute provides information, education, training and networking services for over 12,000 members – both individual professionals and organisations. All members undertake to abide by a Code of Professional Conduct.

BREEAM Awards
BREEAM Awards recognise and reward those involved in the design and construction of the highest scoring buildings certified under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). Developments are independently assessed and certified by a team of experts. Awards are given in recognition of buildings that represent a holistic approach to delivering environmental sustainability, and excel in every environmental category within BREEAM.
Lancaster University’s Eco Residences, delivered in partnership with UPP, were awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating in the 2008 BREEAM Awards. More >

The British Safety Council (BSC)
The BSC is one of the world’s leading occupational health, safety and environmental organisations. Founded in 1957, it now has a 10,000-strong membership among companies and other subscribers and carries out 1,500 days of audits and advisory sessions each year. The BSC works closely with members, giving practical help to organisations, including UPP, to enable them to develop safe systems of work. UPP’s BSC membership benefits all members of staff, our customers and our suppliers, ensuring their safety is considered as part of everything we do.

Contractors Health & Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS)
Using the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) competency appraisal system, our contractors and service providers are fully supported in maintaining their own safety systems. With the support of the Health and safety executive, this scheme has been developed by local authority health and safety and procurement professionals, to use when shortlisting contractors, suppliers and consultants to work for them. Both private sector companies and public sector organisations apply to join the scheme to promote the fact that they meet acceptable standards of health and safety compliance.

Crime Prevention Awards
‘Secured by Design’ is the UK Police flagship initiative aimed at promoting the principle of designing out crime by use of effective crime prevention and security standards for a range of applications. Developments are recognised with a Secured by Design award for promoting safety through everything from layout to landscaping. UPP’s Eco Residences at County and Grizedale Colleges at the University of Lancaster won awards in 2008, for their ground-breaking design, aimed at deterring crime. More >

The Fire Protection Association (FPA)
As part of our commitment to safety in all our premises, UPP is a member of the Fire Protection Association. This gives our business access to the latest fire prevention and protection practice together with current research findings in this important aspect of our work. Through membership of the FPA, we are also able to take advantage of one of the most comprehensive fire safety training programmes in the UK as well as attending regular conferences and seminars.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)
As part of UPP’s continuing commitment to best practice in health and safety across the business, we are members of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA). ROSPA is a registered charity, established for almost 100 years, and provides information, advice, resources and training for members and to the wider public. The organisation is actively involved in the promotion of safety and the prevention of accidents in the workplace, at home and in public spaces.
